Ashland University slates homecoming activities
Ashland University alumni and students will be renewing the annual tradition of Homecoming with a full week of activities slated for Oct. 9 through Oct. 15. The theme for this year’s event is “Cherish the past, soar into the future.”
Highlights for the week include an evening of comedy with Dean Edwards; the Pizza Pizza Pizza Fan Fest prior to Saturday’s football game; the annual Purple Eagle Silent Auction, the All-Alumni Party, the Alumni Awards Brunch, the crowning of the Homecoming king and queen, and Division II football game between the Eagles and Wayne State.
“We expect another great Homecoming weekend this year with record numbers of alumni returning to Ashland to meet up with old friends, create new memories and see the changes that have taken place on campus,” said Jeff Alix, director of alumni and parent relations. “There are many activities throughout the weekend for people of all ages. We promise a weekend that will be remembered.”
The annual Banana Splittin’ Day is slated for Oct. 12, rain or shine. Faculty, staff and students will participate with members of the community in building the Midwest’s largest banana split down College Avenue following the 5 p.m. coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen. A picnic will be served on the front lawn of Founders Hall. The meal is free to University students who are on a meal plan and $10 for faculty, staff and members of the public.

Edwards has been making his mark in comedy following two successful seasons as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live.” With such memorable impressions as Don Cheadle, Michael Jackson and Denzel Washington, as well as such original characters as “Man in Elevator” and “Cop#2,” Edwards has pushed himself to the limits of creativity and exhaustion. Always the multi-tasker, he has found the momentum to juggle his SNL career, his numerous standup appearances and multiple television appearances. Edwards most recently appeared in Showtime’s “Comics Without Borders,” the nine-week comedy series which showcased multi-cultural stand-up comedians. He also helped workshop and create the character of Donkey for nearly two years, leading up to Dreamworks’ “Shrek The Musical” on Broadway.
