Aviso named finalist in national college contest

The Malone University online student newspaper – The Aviso AVW (Audio Video Web) — has been named a finalist for the Associated Collegiate Press’s Pacemaker awards in the category of online-only publications. The Pacemakers are considered by many to be the highest honor awarded for student journalism.

Online Pacemaker winners will be announced at the 91st Annual ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Chicago on Nov. 4.

The recognition comes soon after The Aviso online publication having been awarded First Place for Best Collegiate Newspaper Website in its division from the Ohio Newspaper Association. The division included publications with less-than-daily frequency.

It was the first year The Aviso has entered this competition.

BOOK HIGHLIGHTS VETERAN - Author Norman Fulkerson will speak on his book “An American Knight: The Life of Colonel John W. Ripley, USMC,” on April 30 at 8:30 a.m. in the Heritage Christian School auditorium in Canton. The event is free and open to the public.

Col. John Ripley earned the nation’s second highest honor, the Navy Cross, for his heroics 40 years ago on April 2, 1972 at the Bridge at Dong Ha in Vietnam during the Easter Offensive. Fulkerson says that Col. Ripley spoke of two forms of courage: physical courage and moral courage.

PREMED CAMP PLANNED - Cedarville University invites students who are interested in seeking a profession in the medical field to attend the University’s premed camp, June 11-15.

Students must be entering 10th-12th grades or be an incoming college freshman. Camp provides students with hands-on experience and information about the process of applying to medical school.

The $400 registration fee covers the cost of meals, housing, field trips, supplies and a camp shirt.
Registration for camp can be completed at www.cedarville.edu/premedcamp. The deadline for registration is June 4.
